Invercargill, NZ
We’ve taken several days to enjoy our next location of choice: Invercargill. Invercargill is at the southern tip of the south island and is known as the friendliest town in New Zealand. We’ve certainly found that claim to fame to be true so far. It’s not that other New Zealanders haven’t been friendly, because they have, but these folks are just extra friendly. Dan and I think it’s probably because they don’t get as many tourists down here. The lady at the front desk has even let us borrow some of her personal movies to watch on the huge theater screen. One of the movies we watched was The World’s Fastest Indian (a movie about breaking the land speed record on a motorcycle). We thought it was an appropriate choice since the movie is about Burt Munro who is from Invercargill.
Invercargill is a cute area and we’ve enjoyed walking around the city center. We’ve stopped in at a lot of stores and even went to “Wool-Mart” to pick up some knitting needles and yarn. I’ve started knitting a scarf and even taught Dan how to knit (although I don’t think he plans on finishing a project of any kind, but who knows)! We’ve also stopped in at Domino’s two times!! We hadn’t had pizza in a long time and were really craving it. We’re still in shock of the price though. We got medium pizzas (fancy ones like veggie lovers) for only $4.10! You’ve got to love that.
We’ve seen several monuments, walked around the gardens, and visited a few museums too. We went to the Southland Museum and Art Gallery as well as the Southland Fire Museum both of which we enjoyed. We also took a bus trip out to the suburbs of Invercargill. We learned from our shuttle driver that the buses are free during the middle part of the day and so we decided to take advantage of this. We were enjoying getting a different viewpoint of Invercargill, but guess what — out of all the buses that we could have gotten on, we got on the bus that broke down with a radiator leak! It wasn’t really a problem. They just called for a new bus to come pick us up, but we thought it was funny that we happened to chose the bus that broke down.
Just checking out your site to see what you have been up to . Hopefully by now you believe the sun does shine in Invercargill.
Waiting to see your reactions to scenic Fiordland and western and central southland!
