On to the South Island!

We left Auckland and the north island today in order to head to the south island.  We decided it might be best to visit the south island early on in our trip since New Zealand is heading into winter (it’s the opposite of the US – it’s colder in the south and warmer in the north).  Our first stop in the south island is Dunedin.  We are making Dunedin our home base for a week.  Our new place is centrally located and is a great deal if you stay for 7 nights (about $40 a night).  It’s kind of like an upscale dorm with shared kitchen facilities in the common areas at the ends of the halls, but each room comes with its own tv, microwave, and fridge.  Check out the strange looking bathroom in our room and the huge theater screen in one of the common areas!
