We spent a few days in Kuala Lumpur (or “KL” as many call it), the capital of Malaysia. It is a large airport hub so it is convenient and cheap to fly in and out of. Kuala Lumpur is a big city with roads that wind in and around one another – feel free to check out the map of it on Google maps – it looks like spaghetti! So . . . that being said, we did some walking around close to our hotel, but when we needed to go far we found a taxi to take us. Supposedly they use meters, but we had a difficult time finding anyone who used a meter. Instead, we negotiated prices upfront, thus taking us the most direct way. Our theory is that if they did use a meter they would probably take us a roundabout way that used up more time . . . and thus more money!

Dan and I continue to realize how ignorant we are and how much we have to learn about the world. Neither of us had any idea how what Malaysia was going to be like, but we’ve found it to be a wonderful country. The people in Malaysia are very friendly – especially if you try and use a few words in Malay like “terima kasih” (which means thank you). As we’ve walked around the city we are amazed at how much English we hear and see! Malaysia was occupied by the British until 1957 and it seems that English is still widely used. We have also found the people to be very diverse – mostly Indian, Chinese, and Malaysian – and thus the food and religions are also diverse.
